Project Details

Created by Beth Beaman

We moved into the house about three years ago. The living room and kitchen were both done in a Southwest design--not my taste, so we decided to change it up. The livingroom is pretty small (12x20 ft) First, I started with a paint color. Most people say a darker color makes a room look smaller, but I disagree. Our room has a large picture window that lets in a lot of light. I chose "Burnt Almond" as the wall color from Home Depot. They are extremely helpful and can color-match anything. For the trim, we chose Polar Bear White (also Home Depot). I wanted something funky and fun for furniture and found the green sofa and polka dot chair at a local furniture store for under $600. It's not the best quality, but I really liked it. We purchased the chair and a half and ottoman ($800) from another local store, Hegg's Furniture in Hart, Michigan. The lamp next to the big screen TV is from Target. They have an awesome selection of lighting. The  unique side table, clock, and mirror are from an company called Delia. They have some interesting pieces of furniture, coat racks, drawer pulls, beds, wine holders, etc. I LOVE their stuff and get compliments on them all of the time. As for the window treatments, I looked forever and tried to price out making my own, but luck brought me again to Target and I found these incredible shears in the bathroom shower curtain aisle. They were exactly what I wanted and 1/2 the price of making them myself. I found the rod and hooks (which easily cover the holes for the curtain rings) at Lowe's. My husband made the corner bookcase and the chest we inherited from my grandmother is used to store all of our DVDs. I love to take black and white pictures and found some terrific frames again at Target and they are displayed throughout the room. Good luck with your projects!

Target is the evil empire i secretly love. I'm looking for window treatments and there seems to be no reason to go custom until i'm really rich. Yours look great. And I can't look at this rooom without expecting big Bob to be sitting in that easy chair and makin fun of me for just walking in.

I love the color in the dining room and your front porch is great. That's a huge improvement to the house. Hopefully soon I can come sit there.

i agree with you about dark colors not necessarily making a room look smaller. i actually had to talk one person i know into painting his ceiling tiles dark for a more sophisticated look in his showroom. man he really didn't get it at first. oh...wait...that was Cardy. uhm, bye!
